What men look for when inviting women to dance.

1) Circulate (walk slowly) around the edge of the dance area.

Men who want to dance will stand near the dance floor.

Simply say "Hi" to some of them, smile, and keep walking and circulating.

The men who don't or won't dance will stay far from the floor, sitting at the sides, or congregating around the bar. Don't waste time circulating there.

 2) Stand apart from other women.

A woman standing alone is - by far - most comfortable for men to approach. The quickest way to get more offers to dance is simply stand alone.

Yes, I know, it is politically incorrect to ignore your 'sistahs', but you must decide if you are there to socialize with other women, or to dance with men. Your choice. When two women stand together, men are reluctant to ask one of them to dance. If three or more women are standing together - very few men will approach.

If a group of women is sitting down, then men conclude they prefer to be with other women, not to dance with men. Women sitting in groups get few invitations to dance.

Men call groups of women "hen houses". We avoid going into hen houses - unless we already know you or find you extremely appealing.

So, circulate by yourself, go to the bar by yourself, go to the restroom by yourself - and you will easily make yourself more approachable than most other women at the dance.

Men's dance shoes are typically black lace-up Oxfords with a flat heel for standard dances and a 1 to 2 inch heel for Latin dances.

For women, form is almost as important as function, and shoe styles are as varied as dance categories -- including Latin, swing, cha cha, foxtrot and waltz, to name a few.

Basic designs include open- or closed-toe pumps and sandals. Heels in women's shoes are slim or flared and generally range in height from 1 to 3 inches.

Slim heels make turns and other moves easier. Flared heels are preferred for the Latin dances because they provide more stability.

A Word on Women's Shoes

Women new to the world of ballroom dance may consider purchasing one pair of shoes that will work for a number dances -- typically a closed-toe pump with a 2 to 2.5 inch flared heel and an ankle strap. These are referred to as standard, court or modern dance shoes.
Latin dancers typically wear open-toed shoes or strappy sandals with a 3 inch flared heel. As you become more proficient, you can add more styles to your wardrobe.

Expect to spend about $100-175 for a good pair of ballroom shoes.

Ballroom dance shoes come in a variety of colors. Black is the most popular. Many women choose flesh-colored shoes, which help extend the leg line, for competitions.

Ballroom Dance Shoe Construction
Non-slip soles are essential. Look for suede soles, which provide the right combination of grip and slide.

Rubber sneaker-like soles can stick to the floor and cause knee injuries, and leather soles can slide too much. Dance shoes have thinner soles than normal shoes. Most dancing shoes have a steel shank for support. The shoe material is flexible and lightweight.

Custom-made ballroom costumes are expensive. The reason for this is because they cannot really be mass produced if each costume is unique. Consequently, the person making the costume has to design it, obtain all the materials, and put everything together. The materials alone can be as much as $1,000 if a lot of rhinestones are used. Also, costume making is very labor intensive, which comes at a cost.

When it comes to used ballroom dresses, many times they are sold below what it originally cost to make them. For example, it is not unusual to buy a very nice looking dress for less than $500. The reason for this is because many ballroom dancers simply want to recoup a portion of the original cost and then apply whatever proceeds they receive to buy a new outfit.

If you are a smart shopper, you can get pretty good deals on ballroom dance costumes especially after major competitions. The following is a list of four websites that you can use to search for bargains.

www.dreamgown.com

www.ballroomdancers.com

www.dress.danceplaza.com

www.dancesport.uk.com

In addition to these sites, you can also find good deals on eBay. If you do a lot of ballroom competitions, you might consider shopping for ballroom outfits on a continuous basis and buy one even when you have nothing planned. If you wait until the last minute, you might rush into buying a dress that you are not totally in love it, but if you plan ahead, you can have the luxury of being picky.
